The CB1 Development in Cambridge consisted of the construction of new residential, retail and leisure facilities together with basement car parks. Infrastructure improvements and open spaces were also integrated into the project adjacent to Cambridge railway station.

Hill Partnerships appointed Fussey Piling as the sheet piling contractor to design and install a retaining wall around the perimeter of the site, including temporary propping and extraction of the steel sheet piles at a later date. The value of our contract was approximately £320,000 (after extraction).

Fussey Piling worked with Hill Partnerships from the early stages of the design, since the nature of the design and build contract meant a full set of construction drawings were not readily available. By adopting this client focussed approach to tendering Fussey Piling were able to ensure lead times were reduced, value engineering was employed and one was able to avoid unnecessary delays before mobilising to site.

The ground investigation identified superficial deposits of dense sands and gravels to a depth of roughly 4m, overlying stiff clay. Fussey Piling adopted a system of pre-auguring to loosen the sand and gravel by utilising a MB50 Auger Motor mounted on a Bauer RTG RG 16T Telescopic Leader Rig.
