About This Project

Permanent sheet piled cofferdam adjacent to a road and railway

One of the most logistically difficult projects undertaken by Fussey Piling was successfully achieved at Morning Lane, Hackney.

The project involved the design, supply and installation of sheet piling to construct 2 basements for a retail development just 50m apart on an exceedingly narrow site. To increase the challenge the site was bounded on one side by a fully operational railway and on another by a very busy road.

Miles Fenton, Design Engineer commented “Whilst the site was restricted above ground, the new Crossrail 2 will be constructed underneath the new basements. We had to be very careful when developing the design to limit the lengths of the sheets whilst considering the impact of horizontal deflections on the viaduct”

To meet these stringent requirements once the piles were driven 2 levels of temporary propping were installed to enable full excavation to formation.

The interlocks of the sheet piles were welded to provide a fully waterproof environment with the concrete basement slab.

Both sites were triangular in nature and measured just 7m minimum width widening out over the 20m length to a maximum of about 12m.
